Rye Demolition commences carbon-reduced regeneration of Aldershot town centre

Press Release

January 2022

Industry leading demolition experts Rye Group have been awarded a contract as part of the ongoing regeneration of Aldershot town centre.

This will create a modern new urban quarter, following the safe demolition and redevelopment of the high street multi-storey car park, as well as the Galleries and Arcade shopping centres.

The project will also complement Rushmoor Borough Council’s Union Yard regeneration scheme, which will see Union Street and the High Street become home to 100 new one and two-bedroom town centre homes (18 affordable), 14 flexible commercial units, and eight high quality container spaces, as well as accommodation for 128 local students.

As the centre adjoins a number of residential and commercial properties, Rye Group’s expertise in all aspects of demolition make it the natural choice to ensure works are undertaken safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to local residents and businesses.

Rye Group has also confirmed the project will create a number of non-permanent employment opportunities for residents in Aldershot and the surrounding areas.

In so doing, the company aims to involve and invest in the local community, accessing fresh pools of talent and skill while promoting a stronger understanding of the vital contribution that demolition and rejuvenation projects make to local lives.

The Rye Group recently announced that it will reduce carbon emissions from all site equipment by 90% over the next two years and has given assurances that every effort is being made to minimise any environmental impact to the local environment in Aldershot.

Leo Docherty, Member of Parliament for Aldershot, said: "It’s been brilliant to see Rye Group engaging with the local community from the outset of this project. Our ongoing conversations remain very positive, and we’re looking forward to working closely with Rye Group in the coming months to deliver an exciting new look for Aldershot town centre."

Simon Barlow, Group Managing Director of Rye Demolition, added: "This project is a prime opportunity to demonstrate our belief that we should always positively impact the communities in which we operate within. Not only are we creating a better town centre, but we are also generating local jobs, and supporting local environmental charities to safeguard the development of natural habitats and biodiversity. It is a win-win situation for everyone."

Ben Griffiths, SHE and Operations Director at Rye Demolition, said: "We are delighted to be involved in the transformation of Aldershot town centre. It is an exciting project that will not only demonstrate our company’s technical prowess and industry leadership but also bring many commercial benefits to the area once completed."

Councillor Martin Tennant, Cabinet Member for Major Projects at Rushmoor Borough Council said: "It's fantastic to see more regeneration progress in Aldershot town centre, beginning with the demolition of the link bridge over Wellington Street and then onto the former Galleries shopping centre. This is a significant town centre project, and we are eager to see its transformation begin.”

Councillor David Clifford, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council added: “These are exciting times for Aldershot, with two major redevelopments coming forward. Our residents can look forward to a vibrant new town centre, with a new public space for events as well as new town centre homes and retail and commercial space.”
