At the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) AGM and Awards event on Friday 25 March, industry leading demolition experts Rye Demolition won the Sustainability Champion award for its exemplary efforts in addressing climate change.
Rye operates under the banner of The Sustainable Standard, with a particular focus on reducing its carbon footprint.
Judges of the award heralded Rye for its “Genuine passion and commitment to tackling climate change” and “Collaboration and sharing for the greater good”.
Throughout 2021 and into 2022, Rye has made significant changes to its operation, dramatically reducing its carbon footprint and laying the foundations for further improvements in the coming months and years.
Key initiatives include:
• Transitioning from red diesel to HVO for all site machinery
• Transitioning all company road vehicles from Diesel to HVO
• Committing to 600,000 litres of HVO over the next 12 months, reducing carbon emissions by around 1,724 tonnes
• Investing in new stage 5 machinery
• Achieving recycling and re-use rates of around 98%
Rye has also signed up to The SME Climate Hub and The Climate Pledge, committing to achieving net zero by 2040.
The company is keen to minimise its environmental impact, paving the way for future generations to enjoy the world we live in and supporting its clients in delivering on its own sustainability objectives.
In their award entry, Rye highlighted the industry leading position they have taken in driving environmental initiatives through strong collaboration and idea sharing. At the Demolition Expo at the National Showgrounds in September 2021, Rye opened the NFDC event with an open session discussing its ideas and thought leadership around sustainable demolition.
The award also comes on the back of Rye Group having been re-accredited with the ISO 14001, environmental management standard earlier in 2021.
